Ghost is a Swedish heavy metal band that was formed in Linköping, Sweden in 2006. In 2010, they released a 3-track demo followed by a 7″ vinyl titled “Elizabeth”, and later their debut full-length album Opus Eponymous. The Grammis-nominated album was widely praised and significantly increased their popularity. Their second album and major label debut Infestissumam was released in 2013, debuted at number one in Sweden, and won the Grammis Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. The band released their third studio album, Meliora, in 2015, to much critical acclaim and high record sales, reaching number one in their home country of Sweden, and number eight in the United States. Its lead single, “Cirice”, earned them the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

Ghost is easily recognizable owing greatly to its eccentric on-stage presence. Five of the group’s six members, its ‘Nameless Ghouls,’ wear virtually identical, face-concealing costumes. Prior to a 2017 lawsuit filed by former members of the band, lead singer Tobias Forge obscured his identity behind the character “Papa Emeritus.” The character, which consists of Forge in a prosthetic mask and makeup can be best described as a ‘demonic anti-pope.’ The Papa Emeritus Character has gone through four incarnations – I, II, III, and Nihil. As of the 2018 album Prequelle and subsequent world tour, Forge portrays a character known as “Cardinal Copia,” who is described as being unrelated to any of the Papa Emeritus characters and whose costume consists of either Cardinal vestments or a black tuxedo alongside a prosthetic mask with black eye makeup and the multi-colored eyes which had been present in each Papa character.

Comments

Nico Yazawa says:

I’m glad that there’s people out there who sees metal as a lot more than just screaming and demonic lyrics.

Patryk Copley says:

I absolutely love this album. See the light gets me going and is a beautiful song. This band is amazing and more people need to know about them.

MysterMetalGeek says:

This is best experience of this year thus far, I’d call it the best album so far, but it’s not just an album it’s an experience.

Alexander Ek says:

Personally, I don’t get the hype and the good reviews this album has received. I loved Opus and the early days of ghost. But as one reviewer said, “Ghost stopped making music for me”. I feel the same and thats just fine. But, seeing how the frontman (Tobias) has, according to previous members, 1. denied rightful compensation for touring, 2. fired members during contract negotiation and 3. turned Ghost into a solo band, just bothers me. Lastly, as Tobias stated in an interview, he is, with regard to this album, “deliberately” making stadium music and appealing to a larger crowd. How people are not bothered by such an approach to making an album is beyond me..

Robert Cordero says:

Very disappointed in this album. 3 or 4 ok songs tops.

ARTV says:

WHOA, a perfect score~

Leon GNA says:

Best album of the year up to this point for me.

danman1950 says:

Ghost is doing Jazz Fusion now? WTF?

Sailor Mercury says:

Great review. I feel like this is the kind of band i’d prefer to just listen to the album than watch the live performance. I’m going to go give that album a listen now. :)

Eklypised says:

Is it just me but does Rats and Faith sound a lot alike?

unshapen tuna says:

Upon first listen I didn’t like the album

Tim says:

Tought it sucked only good was rats and faith

Max Gibson says:

I think it is my favourite Ghost album. I’m glad you also gave it a 10!

Brendan Keller says:

Best album so far this year definitely

Donald Miller says:

Album of the year

scott mangino says:

sucks

rickwatford4573 says:

I love this album. It has that 80s Alice Cooper feel. Amazing

Matthew Cool says:

Ghost sounds pretty interesting.

Nuclear Holocaust says:

It’s so catchy. Why is it so catchy? Lol.

I got my Grucifix in the mail yesterday, I think that says it all.

real person says:

I actually just hate the sound

Prince Aligorna says:

Tobias once said that he wanted Ghost to be the best 70’s band to never exist. This one sounds a bit like he wants to be the best 80’s band to never exist now. Not that I’m complaining. I’m all for retro rock and metal of all kinds, especially if it can have a bit of a modern edge to it. ==,

That Slipknot Fan666 says:

Fantastic album, nothing will beat Meliora imo but still. Ghost has never disappointed

Dayman_526 says:

Loved the album, still like Opus and Meliora more. Only song I didn’t like it Pro Memoria

Kamikaze Keeg says:

It’s pretty good. It’s not as good as Meliora I feel, mostly because I think it lacks the same level of punch, but it’s still real solid.

John Stewart says:

Holy crap that thumbnail
