brian carroll says:

Where ’92-’93 were break out years for many indelible groups, ’95 was the year of sonic exploration and content/lyrical maturity. Off my head, three slept-on, incredible albums released during this time are Digable Planets Blowout Comb, De La Soul’s Blowout Comb and Labcabincalifornia from Pharcyde. Keep in mind, the west/east ‘gangster rap’ vibe was in full effect, which makes these experimental albums all the more timeless/priceless in hindsight. Dilla’s sound took the Pharcyde into a new realm; one of maturity, self introspection and social commentary which stood in stark contrast to the gangster shit and Puff club tracks that were saturating air waves at the time. Labcabincalifornia can be enjoyed on the surface alone and also rewards listeners who dig into the arrangements and verses. To say this album is a classic truly is an understatement. As a side note, the “Lil D’ track is Suave Smooth’s (the Pharcyde’s manager at the time) son who was six at the time. If you haven’t heard it, I HIGHLY recommend all fans of the Pharcyde listen to Chapter one: Testing the Waters. It’s heat. Fuck Trump. Befriend your neighbors…community first. Skip the sucker shit. PEACE and BLESSINGS-
