Portal – Ion ALBUM REVIEW

Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux4gIfyI5h0&ab_channel=ProfoundLore

Horrifying! Portal’s Ion is one of the most dystopian and sound-rich technical death metal records of the decade.

Some people are saying that this album is boring and they don’t really get why you gave it a 9. I think there’s some merit inside those arguments, and to an extent I agree, but I still think that the instrumentation’s great and a 9/10 isn’t really out of pocket for an album like this.

Sorry but this time you’ve mistaken shit for chocolate ice cream.
This review is misleading, it gives the impression of an album with a varied flow, with different well crafted moods, consciously produced and played.
It’s absolutely not my impression, after many listens, trying to overcome my first and second impressions.
Finally your words are way more interesting than the sound of this album.
The review is misleading because this album is very repetitive, it shifts around alternating 3-4 different sound approaches, yes it’s suffocating but in a boring, kind of dumb way.

Production: drums sound like a farting old motorcyle, vocals are an average growlbelch, guitars and ‘ambient noises’ have nothing really special, original or refined, they sound like the outcome of a “ok let’s keep this sound, it’s not bad” choice.

Playing skills: who cares of labels, but they’re not at all a ‘tech death’ band. Drummer can’t hold a steady blastbeat for more than 10 seconds, guitar playing is an amateurish endless tremolo picking of similar randomly composed riffs.
Techincal skills are closer to early blackmetal than contemporary death.

Just to explain better my opinion: you reviewed Thantifaxath, for example. THAT is a beautifully suffocating band, technical, very attentive and aware in production, skillful song writing and amazing narrative flow of the album. Varied and never uselessly repetitive, even in the aesthetic of blackened death metal.
Portal is not.

Yes Portal have an aesthetic you can plunge into, but I find it very amateurish and almost ‘found by chance’. Like a bunch of fellows dressing up very seriously for Halloween.
This band is almost a Spinal Tap of death metal.
9/10? They wonderfully fooled you.
